The midwife running the antenatal clinic provides maternity care in conjunction with the doctors. We have the use of GP Units at St Mary’s Hospital, St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester and Petersfield Cottage Hospital for suitable cases. For all mothers we aim to provide continuity of care throughout their pregnancy.
Programme of Care
On confirmation of pregnancy, an appointment is made for you the to see the GP for the relevant paperwork to be completed and the midwife is informed.
8-10 weeks: the midwife arranges to see you at home and discusses whether you should have midwife-led care or shared consultant care. You will be referred to hospital for scan.
16 weeks: the midwife will generally see you at the Antenatal Clinic.
20 weeks: hospital scan.
Thereafter you will be seen by the midwife, as considered necessary.
36 weeks: you will be seen at home or at the Antenatal Clinic by the midwife to discuss birth, pain relief, what to take into hospital, etc.
Term+7 days: you will generally be referred to consultant for assessment and consideration of induction of labour.
The GP will be notified:
- of any patient requesting a home delivery.
- immediately of any problems, concerns or unusual events.
- of any hospital discharge as soon as possible.
After baby is born:
The midwife will visit you daily during the 4/5 days following delivery if you are at home. Subsequent home visit(s) from the midwife will be at the discretion of the midwife in consultation with you.
You will be reminded to make a post-natal appointment at surgery 6-8 weeks post delivery.
10-14 days following delivery: the health visitor will do a growth assessment of baby as well as a health needs assessment of mother and baby, Edinburgh post-natal score and discuss bonding and health promotion.
6-8 weeks post delivery: the GP will see you and your baby for post-natal 6 week check. The health visitor will also arrange an appointment for first immunisations for baby.
